What To Look For In The Best Robot Vacuum For Dog Hair

Choosing the best robot vacuum for dog hair can be overwhelming, especially since there are so many to choose from!

The short video below will give you a brief overview of certain features to look for, and we’ll discuss the features in more detail below:

Your Budget

The first thing you want to consider is your budget. How much are you willing to spend on a robot vacuum?

Prices range from $200 to as much as $1000 or more.

Higher-priced robot vacuums usually come with many more features, such as Wi-Fi Connectivity, a self-emptying dust bin, mapping capabilities, more power, etc…

This doesn’t mean that a lower-priced robot vacuum won’t do a good job of cleaning up dog hair, it just won’t have the many features of a higher-priced model.

Your Flooring

Consider the flooring in your home. Is it mostly hard surfaces such as hardwood, laminate and tile, or is it mostly carpet?

Many robot vacuums are designed for hard floor surfaces and can handle low-pile carpets, or thin carpets, while others are able to handle medium-pile carpets.

Some models feature Carpet Boost which offers more power on carpets.

Many of the best models will feature an auto-adjust cleaning head, meaning the robot vacuum will automatically adjust to different floor surfaces.

Battery Life and Run Time

Usually the bigger the battery, the more run time the robot vacuum will give.

If your house is really big, then a bigger battery life might be important to you.

You want the robot vacuum to last through an entire cleaning session, before needing a re-charge.

Robot vacuums can clean for up to 1.5 hours, on average, and some high-end models can last up to 2 hours.

Some robot vacuums when they are in need of re-charging will navigate back to their base station, re-charge and then finish cleaning.

How Loud Is The Vacuum?

Noise may be a concern for you if you plan on having the robot vacuum clean your home while you’re reading or watching TV.

Also, your dog may not like the sound of the vacuum. I know that my dog absolutely hates it when I bring out my vacuum cleaner.

Even though robot vacuums are quieter than standard vacuums, some make an annoying high-pitched whistle noise, while others make a mechanical grinding noise.

Many people choose to have the robot vacuum clean while they are out of the house.

Wi-Fi Connectivity

Most entry-level robot vacuums come with remote control, that allows you to control where the vacuum will clean.

These models are a great option if you want to save some cash.

However, having to physically control the vacuum with a remote, or by manually pushing a button, kind of defeats the purpose of having a robot do all the work for you.

A robot vacuum with Wi-Fi connectivity and app capabilities will offer you more convenience.

You’ll be able to schedule cleaning sessions, receive notifications, map a route of your home, and control the vacuum using your voice.

Stair Detection and Obstacle Avoidance

This is a standard feature among almost all robot vacuums.

It allows the robot to detect when it has reached a step, or ledge so that it can back up and avoid tumbling down the stairs.

Most robot vacuums have intelligent sensors that can sense obstacles such as furniture, toys, and any other objects in their way.

Sensors are located on or near the vacuum’s shock-absorbing bumpers, and allow the vacuum to steer through these obstacles without slowing down.

Dustbin Size

The size of the dustbin will matter to you, especially as a dog owner.

Look for dustbins that are larger than 400 millilitres. Larger dustbins mean you don’t have to worry about emptying the bin after each cleaning.

A smaller dustbin requires emptying after each cleaning, and if your home has a lot of dog hair, it may need emptying during cleaning.

Self-Emptying

Higher-end robot vacuums will feature a self-emptying dustbin.

Some models will empty their dustbins after each use, while others may empty them once it’s full.

Either way, it’s a nice feature to have and saves you from getting your hands dirty.

The dustbin gets emptied into a large capacity dust bag that’s part of the charging base.

Mopping

Some robot vacuums are capable of vacuuming and mopping.

This is a great feature for dog owners, especially for cleaning up spills and messes and muddy paw prints.

This is incredibly helpful for me. I have a dog and a cat and their fur is all over the place. I vacuum maybe once a week.

My favorite one posted is the Roborock S5 MAX Robot Vacuum and Mop Cleaner. Dry and wet messes? I’m sold!

I will definitely look into it!

  2. Hi Jenny, I’m the proud owner of a long-haired cat, and she’s always shedding fur and tracking litter around the kitchen from her litter tray. I must admit I’d never thought of getting a robot vacuum for those in-between cleans, but after reading your super review I’m definitely going to look into it. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Thank you for this article. Our dogs definitely shed a lot of hair and we were looking for a robot vacuum to help clean the dog hair. Thank you for reviewing these because that will help us choose one. By the way, I like your table of contents widget. We usually want the quietest one possible but we could always use the vacuum while we are out of the house, like you said.

Like if we take the dog for a walk then we could turn on the robot vacuum. That is a nice video of the puppy riding on the vacuum. I will bookmark your page for future reference and probably go with your number one recommendation, the Eufy Boost IQ RoboVac 15C MAX.

    • Hi C,

Choosing the quietest robot vacuum is an important factor for many people.  Some people aren’t bothered by the noise because they run the vacuum while they are at work or running errands.  You do need to remember that robot vacuums are quieter than traditional vacuums.  Most dogs do not like the noise of traditional vacuums, but they aren’t bothered by the noise of a robot vacuum.

I am glad you enjoyed my review, and that it has helped you to choose the best one for you.  Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  4. You deserve a very big THANK you for this amazing review.

Dogs can be so annoying and constant in repeating these annoying things over and over again.  By that, I mean tracking dirt in the house and leaving dog hair everywhere.

I have always wanted to get a robot vacuum, but I have never had the opportunity to come across such a detailed post. I have tried to get one from a store but the amount of battery life indicated wasn’t satisfactory at all and I had to continue the search.  Thank you for also giving other insights on what should be looked out for. I hope to see more of this review. Kudos!

I am glad you enjoyed my review.  I try to be as detailed as possible when reviewing an item because when I want to buy something I put a lot of research into it.  Expensive items such as robot vacuums need to be researched thoroughly, and that is what I did.

I hope this review has helped you to narrow your search for the best robot vacuum.

Thank you for taking the time to comment.

  5. Wow, this review is really awesome. Of course I’d agree with you, I only know about the Roomba which we used at home and like you mentioned in the find, it was really loud and we had to manage using it that way but in all honesty, it did a really great job in the house. Getting a robot vacuum is really cool if one has the money and doesn’t want so much stress cleaning the home.

    Reply
    • Hi Henderson,

Roomba is definitely the leader when it comes to robot vacuums.  They are however expensive, and there are great options to choose from that are lower priced, but just as effective.  I do like the Eufy because it is super quiet and it is under 300 dollars.  It all depends on what someone is looking for and how much they want to spend.  Robot vacuums really do take some of the stress away from cleaning the home.  They are a great investment.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  6. That’s a very informative and well-written review for the robot vacuums. We have a dog that fills the floor with dog hair. Our 2year old infant rolls on the floor all the time. We would like something effective with the hairs and fluff. We’ve been discussing buying a robot vacuum for a while. A friendly couple of ours have bought Samsung and are very satisfied. The prices are reasonable. It’s worth the investment, surely. Thanks a lot.

    • Hi Water Life,

You are surely busy with a 2-year-old and a dog!  A robot vacuum would help free up a lot of your time.  Samsung is a very trusted brand and I’m sure you would be satisfied as well with their robot vacuum.  It’s great to hear that your friends are happy with theirs.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  7. Great review.  I have been saving up to buy me a robot vacuum for about two months now, because I own a mix breed dog (shepherd lab) and he sheds like mad crazy.  I was looking for a robot vacuum with WI-FI, and the Samsung looks like a really good choice for me, because it’s reasonably priced.

Thanks for helping me find a great robot vacuum.

    • Hi Dora, I am so glad to help you find a great robot vacuum.  The Samsung Powerbot R7070 is an excellent choice for you, it has great suction, and does really well at cleaning corners and edges.  It is reasonably priced, and has a 1-Year warranty, you will enjoy using it.  Thanks for your comment.

  8. Hi Jenny,

Thank YOU for reviewing these. Lucky me, my 2 little dogs don’t go for mud puddles, but their dog hair and dander certainly is an issue. Not only that but, I have been thinking seriously about purchasing a robot vacuum as a solution. I had no idea they could handle carpeting too, huh!

So, because of that high pitch whistling noise it would not be wise to schedule the robot vacuum to work while trying to sleep at night then? That is disappointing, because I would have loved to set it and forget it for night time operation.

Okay, but I do not own an Alexa or a Google Assistant, so does that mean I cannot benefit with that option? However, I do have a tablet that I could use.

With these 3 great choices I will need to check to see if they are available on Amazon’s Canadian site. Your links led me to the United State’s Amazon.

Sounds like the iRobot 980 might have been the best option for my needs, but OUCH! That price tag is making it a no-go for me too. 🙁

    Reply
    • Hi Trish, thank you for your comment.  It is no problem for you if you do not own an Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, that is used if you want to use voice command. For instance, you would just say “Alexa, ask RoboVac to start cleaning”, and it would clean, it is very cool.

Your tablet can be used to operate the vacuum, you would just need to install the app.  The Euphy and the Samsung both come with a remote to operate without Wi-Fi, and the iRobot does not have a remote included to use without Wi-Fi, so you will need to push the clean button manually.

The Euphy BoostIQ RoboVac 30C, is the most quiet of the 3 vacuums, you can be in the same room with it without being bothered by noise.

All 3 robot vacuums are offered on the Canadian Amazon site, and the Euphy 30C is the most affordable option.  The iRobot is the most expensive.

I hope that I have answered your questions, and if you need more help or information I would be happy to help.

  9. Thanks for the very informative review of robot vacuums for dog hair, Jenny.  While animal hair is not such a problem for me, I have been noticing an increase in the breeding habits of dust bunnies at my house.  Anything that can handle dog hair well, will probably significantly cut down on the dust bunny population, I am thinking….

    • Hi Netta, you are absolutely right, a robot vacuum that is powerful enough to suck up dog hair, will have no problem tackling dust and debris in your home.  Any of the 3 that I reviewed are great on hard floors, and have increased suction power on carpets, just think of how clean your home will be after you use a robot vacuum, and the time you will save.  Thanks for commenting.

  10. Wow Jenny, I really did not know that something like this exists. I have two dogs and you are right, they can make a real mess with their hair but I always clean it manually. I like to use Samsung brand so I think that it will be good to buy PowerBot R7070 Pet Robot Vacuum. My wife will be happy because of this.

    • Hi Daniel, thank you for your comment.  With a robot vacuum you will no longer have to clean all that dog hair manually, think of the time you will save.  The Samsung PowerBot R7070 Pet Robot Vacuum is a great choice, it really does a great job cleaning edges and corners, because of the rubber blade that extends out of the vacuum, a great feature.  Samsung is great, and if you already own Samsung products you will have no issues getting it set up, and you’ll love how easy the robot vacuum is to clean, and the dustbin just pops right out.

  11. After reading your in depth review I must say I am also leaning towards the Eufy Boost IQ RoboVac 30C one because of the price, I think though the iRobot is a great brand it is becoming overpriced mainly due to the name, just my opinion. I am getting one for my studio though it is a small room I just dont always have time. With a mini dachshund and beagle mix the shedding is constant!! I like the fact you pointed out the quietness of it,she hates my big vacuum cause of the noise.

    • Hi Cathy, price wise the Eufy is great, and offers great suction, and Wi-Fi connectivity, it has a lot of the features that a higher end robot vacuum would have, but at an affordable price.  The best thing about it is that it is super quiet!!  I know my dog hates it too when I bring out my standard vacuum, but with the Eufy robot vacuum it is not an issue.
