If your dog struggles with dry, cracked paws or lifts their feet in discomfort from icy sidewalks, Mushers Secret could be the solution you’re looking for.

Many dogs don’t like wearing boots, which can make protecting their paws in harsh conditions challenging.

In this personal review, I’ll share how Mushers Secret has become my go-to product for keeping my dog’s paws healthy and protected, no matter the season.

What Is Mushers Secret?

Mushers Secret is a 100% natural paw wax that protects your dog’s paws year-round. It shields from snow, ice, and harsh chemicals in winter, and from hot pavement and sand in warmer months.

Not just for paws, it can also be applied to your dog’s snout, ears, elbows, and even hot spots.

Mushers Secret can help protect your dog from:

  • Harsh winter chemicals and snowballing.
  • Dry cracked paws and lawn chemicals.
  • Hot pavement and sand burns.
  • Rough terrain and outdoor activities like walking, jogging, or hunting.
  • Soothing and protecting sensitive areas like ears and elbows.

Note: Even with Mushers Secret protection, always check surfaces like pavement and sand. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. For more on dangerous temperatures and paw burn symptoms, check out this helpful guide from Four Paws.

My Review of Mushers Secret (Pros and Cons)

I first discovered Mushers Secret about six years ago when I needed a solution to prevent snowballing between my Golden Retriever Ellie’s paws.

Living in a snowy climate, I knew I needed something effective to protect her paws during the winter months. I alternate between using Mushers Secret and dog boots, like my favourite Pawz Dog Boots, for additional protection.

Below is a list of the pros and cons that I’ve discovered while using Mushers Secret:

Pros:

  • Protects from Snow and Ice: It’s great for protecting your dog’s paws from ice, snowballing, and harmful chemicals like salt and ice melt.
  • Easy to Apply: It’s smooth and easy to apply, making the process quick and simple.
  • Alternative to Boots: For dogs that aren’t fond of wearing boots, Mushers Secret offers a great alternative.
  • Absorbs Quickly: A thin layer absorbs quickly, so you don’t have to wait long.
  • All-Natural & Non-Toxic: It’s made from all-natural ingredients, so I feel good about using it on Ellie.
  • Fresh, Clean Smell: It has a natural scent, almost like pine or eucalyptus, from the ingredients, no added fragrances.
  • Long-Lasting: A little goes a long way, making it a good value for the money.
  • Soothes and Softens: It helps to keep her paws soft and prevents cracking.

Cons:

  • Potentially Slippery: If you apply too much, it can make your floors slippery or even stain carpets, so be cautious with how much you use.
  • Dogs Love to Lick It: Ellie tends to lick it off, so I have to apply it right before we go for a walk or when she’s distracted.
  • Can Be Greasy: If you apply too much, it can be greasy until it absorbs, which may cause slippery floors.
  • Not for Hot Surfaces: While it’s great for cold weather, I wouldn’t rely on it for hot pavement protection.

Despite a few minor drawbacks, I still love using Mushers Secret. Applying a thin layer before a walk or while your dog is sleeping works best, and a little really goes a long way.

For dog owners who struggle with keeping boots on their pets, Mushers Secret is a great alternative for paw protection without the hassle.

How To Use Mushers Secret

Using Mushers Secret is quick and easy, but applying it properly can make all the difference in protecting your dog’s paws. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:

  1. Clean The Paws: Before applying Mushers Secret, make sure your dog’s paws are clean and dry. This helps the wax absorb better and ensures no dirt or debris gets trapped.
  2. Apply A Thin Layer: Scoop out a small amount of the wax and rub it between your fingers to warm it up. Then, gently apply a thin layer to the paw pads, ensuring even coverage. Don’t forget to get between the toes to prevent snowballing in winter or dirt buildup during other seasons.
  3. Let It Absorb: Allow the wax to absorb for a few minutes before heading outside. Mushers Secret absorbs quickly, so you won’t need to wait long.
  4. Reapply As Needed: Depending on the weather and activity, you may need to reapply every few days, especially in harsher conditions like snow, ice, or hot pavement.

Additional Tips For Using Mushers Secret

To get the best results from Mushers Secret, here are a few simple tips:

  • Apply the wax just before walks or bedtime to reduce licking.
  • Store it at room temperature to keep the texture smooth and easy to apply.
  • A little goes a long way, use a thin layer for quick absorption and less mess.

Mushers Secret vs. Dog Boots

While Mushers Secret is an excellent alternative to dog boots, it’s important to understand how they compare:

  • Mushers Secret: Easier to apply, doesn’t fall off, provides natural protection, great for sensitive dogs.
  • Dog Boots: Offers more physical protection but can be difficult to put on, may fall off, and some dogs dislike them.

In my experience, Mushers Secret is much more convenient, especially for quick walks or when boots are impractical.

  1. Thanks for sharing this article with us Jenny. I’ve been seeing ads for a lot of similar products to this and it makes so much sense to purchase something like this for our beloved pets. We keep our own hands and feet moisturized so why not theirs? I like how Mushers Secret is non-toxic and safe for dogs, even if they happen to lick it off of their paws. I notice that it is made out of beeswax, however, I know for some dog owners this could pose an issue since beeswax is a common allergy. Do you know of a beeswax-free alternative for those who are allergic to beeswax?

    • Hi Rachel,

Thanks for asking this question.  You will find that pretty much all of the paw waxes on the market will have beeswax listed as one of their ingredients, even many of the DIY versions.  The reason for this is that beeswax is an excellent natural ingredient that works to protect your dog’s paws from the harsh ground, as well as heals and soothes dry cracked paw pads.

That being said, beeswax can be an allergy to humans like you mentioned.  I have searched for a beeswax-free alternative and have discovered they are hard to find!  However, I found Petveda Soothing Butter Paw Balm.  It contains kokum butter, shea butter and coconut oil.  The thing to remember is that this one is a balm instead of a wax so it is meant to moisturize and heal the paws instead of preventing ice and snow buildup on the paws.  I cannot speak on how well it works, but you may wish to check it out.  My other suggestion would be to use dog boots if you are unable to find a beeswax-free solution.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts,

      Jenny.
