[UPDATED August 2021]
Welcome to my review of the FitBark 2 Dog Activity Monitor. FitBark 2 is a tiny bone-shaped device that tracks your dog’s health and activity. In a nutshell, it’s like a Fitbit but for dogs!
FitBark 2 gives you insight into your dog’s mood, fitness and overall health. It can even identify health concerns before any visible symptoms appear in your dog. Sounds pretty good right?
FitBark 2 is a very valuable device to have! Find out in this in-depth review how the FitBark 2 works, what it does, and why it is essential for your dog’s health.
What Does The FitBark 2 Dog Activity Monitor Do?
Here is an overview and list of features of the FitBark 2:
- Monitor Your Dog’s Sleep & Activity 24/7: Your dog’s sleep quality and daily activity will be tracked every minute. Find out how far your dog has walked/travelled, how many calories were burned, as well as overall health and behaviour.
- Set Fitness Goals: The FitBark App allows you to set fitness goals for your dog based on breed, age, and weight. You can compare your dog’s health and fitness levels to dogs of the same age, weight or breed.
- Monitor Mobility & Pain: Invite your dog trainer or vet to monitor any changes in mobility, osteoarthritis, or orthopedic rehabilitation. Catch early signs of pain, discomfort, or disease by following the FitBark Health Index.
- Monitor Stress & Anxiety: When you’re away from your dog, you’ll be able to keep an eye on his stress or anxiety levels to see how he is doing when you are not with him. FitBark 2 is great for monitoring your dog’s separation anxiety, to see if it has worsened or improved while you are gone. By glancing at the Hourly View in the FitBark App, you’ll be able to compare the Bark points that your dog has accumulated while you are gone vs the points accumulated while you are at home.
- Monitor Itchiness & Skin Disease: Many dogs suffer from skin allergies, causing them to lick, scratch, and bite at their paws or skin. Most dogs scratch and lick at night while they are trying to rest. This is where FitBark 2 will help you monitor your dog’s skin allergies. If your dog is being treated for a skin disease or if you have changed his diet, the FitBark nightly Sleep Score will help you track your dog’s progress to see if the condition has improved or worsened.
- Link To Your Human Fitness Tracker: Get healthy with your dog! Link your Fitbit, Apple Watch, HealthKit, or Google Fit device and track your activity levels together. You can set goals for yourself and your dog and motivate each other.
- FitBark Clock Face: The FitBark Clock Face is available for Fitbit Sense, Versa 3, Versa 2, Versa and Ionic. You can glance at your wrist to track your activity levels along with your pup’s.
This short video gives a brief overview of what the FitBark 2 does.
FitBark 2 Can Provide You With Answers
The FitBark 2 dog activity monitor can provide you with many helpful insights into your dog’s health. Let’s look at some common questions, and how FitBark can answer them.
How Can FitBark Help My Dog Lose Weight?
When you set up your FitBark, you are asked what lifestyle you want for your dog, based on 3 percentiles, Typical, Active, or Olympian.
The FitBark will offer a real-time comparison between dogs of similar age, weight and breed across the world. Your dog’s activity is measured in BarkPoints, a higher level of BarkPoints means your dog is more active.
You can also measure how many calories your dog has burned. When your dog moves he/she will collect BarkPoints, and more calories will be burned. You can use this to estimate how much food to feed. An active dog requires more caloric intake than a less active dog.
How Can FitBark Help Monitor My Dog’s Separation Anxiety?
With FitBark, you will be able to check the mobile app and track your dog’s activity level measured in BarkPoints.
You will be able to see if your dog has settled down after you are gone (fewer BarkPoints), or if he is active. The higher the BarkPoints, the more anxious your dog is.
You can compare your dog’s daily activity levels by looking at the average BarkPoints from a day spent with you, to that of a day spent without you.
Is The Dog Walker I Hired Walking My Dog?
Hiring a dog walker for your dog is a great idea while you are at work. But, how can you be sure your dog is actually being walked?
With FitBark you will be able to track how much exercise your dog is getting. Basically, you’ll be able to make sure the dog walker is getting paid to do the job.
Just open the FitBark mobile app, sync via Bluetooth when your dog gets home and you can find out in seconds.

FitBark 2 Pros and Cons
Pros
- It is very affordable and comes with a 30 day money back guarantee and 1 year warranty.
- Battery lasts up to 6 months, and you don’t need to remove the unit from your dog’s collar.
- It is small and lightweight.
- Works anywhere in the world, on land or in water, it is waterproof.
- Fits all dogs.
- Super easy to set up, pair and sync with your smartphone.
- Gives consistent, accurate and dependable data, that you can share with your friends or vet.
- No monthly fees to use it.
- Excellent customer service and support available 24/7 from the mobile app or your computer.
- Compare your activity with Apple and Fitbit devices.
Cons
- You need to use a collar that is less than 1.5 inches wide.
- Does not have any GPS tracking abilities. **There is a new FitBark GPS version that works only in the U.S.**
- Have to use new zip ties every time you want to attach it to a different collar (comes with 8 zip ties).
- A common complaint is that the coloured covers tend to fall off. This is usually a result of the covers not being attached properly.
- A common complaint is that it is not waterproof like it says it is. This is because you need to make sure that the charging pins are kept dry. After the FitBark has become wet, you should remove the cover and let the pins dry fully before putting the cover back on.
- Does not track your dog’s heart rate. Not yet anyway, FitBark could be working on this in the future.
- Does not work on a harness. Using it on a harness will reduce the activity and sleep tracking accuracy.
Final Thoughts
The FitBark 2 Dog Activity Monitor is an excellent device for any dog owner to have. The impressive battery life of 6 months, lightweight design, ability to work anywhere in the world and affordable price, are only a few of its great features.
FitBark 2 allows you to keep track of your dog’s overall health and wellbeing. It has the ability to identify any health issues at their early stages before any visible symptoms appear in your dog. It is beneficial to dog owners who have anxious dogs, or dogs who need to lose weight.
I highly recommend the FitBark 2, but don’t just take my word for it, it is loved and recommended by dog owners and veterinarians all over the world!
If you happen to live in the U.S. and also want the ability to track your dog’s location, then you should try the new FitBark GPS.
Have you tried the FitBark 2 dog activity monitor yet?
Share your thoughts and comments below. I would love to hear from you.
I am the proud owner of a Golden Retriever named Ellie. She keeps me busy, and when she is resting, you can find me working on my blog. She is always close by though. I live in Stirling, ON Canada with my husband, and we both enjoy the never a dull moment life with our Ellie.
I have been looking for a dog activity monitor for quite some time, luckily I found your review on the FitBark 2. I like that it is lightweight, as well as waterproof. I take my dog swimming all the time and that is a huge plus to find one that can be used in the water. I just wish that it had GPS as well. That would bring the price up a bit, but it would be a huge advantage.
Hi Ann,
FitBark 2 works anywhere in the world and is at a great price point. There are no monthly fees or hidden fees, and with the money-back guarantee, you have nothing to lose!
FitBark GPS is the newest version, launched in late 2019, and is available to U.S. residents only at this time. This is certainly great news if you live in the U.S., and hopefully, FitBark will launch the GPS version to the rest of the world.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Jenny.
Great review, Jenny! This is just perfect for those who prioritize fitness but also want to tag their canine friend along.
What I like about the product is the long battery life. That way, you don’t have to worry about constant recharging, and you can just keep monitoring the activities of your dog.
And, I know sometimes it’s depressing to see pets get ill and although FitBark may not necessarily indicate what’s wrong with a dog, I think it does provide at least a general idea of a dog’s health.
I hope to see an upgrade that includes a heart rate tracker in the future, but still, it’s a very useful gadget to have.
Hi Ron,
Yes, FitBark is a great way for dog owners to get healthy right alongside their dogs. For those who own a FitBit, they can keep track of how they are doing.
A 6-month battery life is one of FitBark’s many great features. Let’s hope FitBark comes up with even more impressive upgrades in the future.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts,
Jenny.
Hi Jenny – What a great idea! This was fun to read. In this hi-tech world we live in, why not have the ability to monitor your dog? I’m surprised that it’s so affordable. I wonder if a future version will have a camera with it. Then you’ll really know all that goes on.
Great post – thanks for the opportunity!
Hi Nathaniel,
I’m glad you enjoyed this review. FitBark is really affordable which is great for dog owners to be able to see how their dog’s health measures compared to other dogs of similar breed and weight.
I’m sure FitBark will be coming up with a future version sometime soon, but for now, the FitBark 2 is pretty impressive.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts,
Jenny.
This is indeed a really nice device I must say. I’m very much interested in this device because I have a dog walker but I have doubt’s about him doing his job. The ability to see the weight and health status of my dog on my phone from the device is really amazing. I’ll make sure I get this FitBark device for my buddy. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Dane,
Yeah, you never know with some dog walkers if they are actually walking your dog. I’m sure many of them don’t, or they don’t walk far enough. With FitBark you can be certain that you are paying your dog walker to do their job. You’ll be able to have proof.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Jenny.
Less than 70$? This FitBark 2 is the real deal I must say. I like the fact that it fits perfectly in the dog’s collar which makes it rather unnoticeable and less prone to being awkward for the dog. I also like this because it gives accurate information concerning the dog’s calorie intake and loss. Wow! This would be the perfect way to get my dog(Shelly) to shed off some weight. The battery charge life has won me over. 6months on a single charge? That’s simply massive.
Hi RoDarrick,
I am glad you are so impressed with FitBark! It has some really impressive features, that’s why it is so popular! At less than $70 dollars, and a 30-day money-back guarantee, you really can’t go wrong with it.
The battery life is really what impresses most people, 6-months! I wish my iPhone had that. But, yes, it is a great way for you to monitor your dog’s weight and calorie intake.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Jenny.
I have never heard of FitBark, and I am so glad I came across your article today! Not only does FitBark monitor your dog’s activities, but it also collects useful data about their health and how many calories they burn. That is amazing!
I live in the middle of nowhere with five dogs and three cats (there is a lot of space for them, I have a large piece of land), and one of my dogs is always very sad when I go to work in the mornings. He used to have bad separation anxiety, but he has improved a lot. It would, however, still be a good idea to get FitBark for him, just to see what his activity level is after I leave for work. Whenever I leave he makes this heartbreaking face as if he were not going to see me again … But as I said, he has improved a lot 🙂
When you mentioned that it was waterproof, I was relieved, but then in the cons, it stated that it is not 100% waterproof (if the charging pins are not kept dry, which makes sense, in a way). Some of my dogs love to get wet, especially on hot days. So, if I get the FitBark, there may be a risk of it getting wet.
I will share this with my friends, I know many people who have a dog, and I also know many dog rescue people. They will love this!
Hi Christine,
It sounds like you are busy with 5 dogs and 3 cats! FitBark would be great for your dog who suffers from separation anxiety. You will be able to see if your dog is able to get settled after you leave, or if your dog is restless and anxious. It is always sad for us dog owners too when we have to leave our dog because the sad face is hard to deal with. It is great news that your dog has shown a huge improvement.
If you do use the FitBark in the water, just be sure to remove the cover after to let the charging pins dry completely, and then you should be fine.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Jenny.
Thank you for this informative post!
I hadn’t heard about the FitBark until I read this. I’m a parent of two dogs, a Border Collie and a Jack Rusell. They have wellness plans at Banfield Pet Hospital (a veterinary hospital chain). Recently they partnered up with a company called Pet Insight and offered me free Whistle devices that do much the same thing as the FitBark.
Still, the Whistle lacks a few things and the battery life is about two weeks before it needs recharging. One thing they do offer is a model with GPS.
It’s interesting to see how other makes and models compare. The FitBark is better when it comes to integrating with the human counterpart. I can’t link my Whistle to my FitBit account and compare it like you can with the FitBark and I think the FitBark has a better battery life, but that may be because the Whistle uses WiFi and updates constantly where you have to sync with the Fitbark.
How does it hold up, overall? My Jack Russell was able to wiggle her Whistle free enough to chew on it and actually broke the plastic ledge that the rubber holder stretches to that keeps it on her collar. I had to have the unit replaced.
Thank you for this post. It gives me a lot to consider when it’s time for me to replace the units I have.
Hi Scott,
It is nice to see a comparison between the Whistle and the FitBark. The FitBark has many great features that are superior to the Whistle like you said the battery life is better with FitBark, and FitBark is better at integrating with a human activity monitor.
Yes, the FitBark lacks GPS, but for most dog owners who want to track their dog’s health GPS is not really important to them.
The FitBark holds up really well. It attaches to your dog’s collar with sturdy zip-ties, so it doesn’t move around or tangle. It is durable, made from high-impact polycarbonate. FitBark covers are completely optional, and they are soft and comfortable for your dog, but they do not stand up to heavy chewing. (your dog shouldn’t be chewing on them anyway).
I am sure that when it comes time for you to replace your other device, you will be more than happy with the FitBark 2.
Thanks for your thoughts and comment.
Jenny.
Thank you very much this is a great idea. I never thought of a dog activity monitor but actually, it would be smart because dog’s activity levels can vary greatly. It looks very affordable and that’s great that it has a 30-day money-back guarantee, that shows the company is confident people will like it.
I will definitely look more into this and share it with my friends who have dogs. That would be funny to use this and find out the dog walker wasn’t actually walking the dogs LOL!
Hi C,
FitBark is a great company that stands behind their products. Their customer support is fantastic. They are always available to assist you and help you with any problems or questions you may have. FitBark is a great product, and the 1-year warranty, along with the 30-day money-back guarantee is just the icing on the cake.
I agree it would be useful to see if the dog walker was actually walking the dog. I don’t think the dog walker would find it funny though.
Thank you for your comment.
Jenny.
Thank you for your review, I was looking into getting one of these to see how much activity my dog tracks throughout a day since he is extremely active in the backyard so I was curious. I love that the FitBark 2 has a 6 month battery life. I feel like having to charge every two weeks can be inconvenient so for the extra 45 bucks I might as well get the FitBark 2. I am surprised to see it uses zip ties to attach to the collar though. Do you know if you were to say use something else to secure it that can be reused would it mess with the accuracy?
Hi Huy, thanks for your comment. The FitBark2 uses zipties to attach it to your dog’s collar, each FitBark2 comes with 8 zipties. You will need 2 zipties to secure it in place, as long as you don’t plan on changing collars you will be fine. However, if you do switch the FitBark2 to a different collar then you need to use 2 new zipties. Extra zipties can be purchased for a minimal fee. The zipties are specifically designed for the FitBark2, and using anything else to try and attach it to the collar could likely disrupt its accuracy.
Ah that makes a lot of sense, so if I stick with the same collar than there wouldn’t be any need to change out the zip ties than.
That is right, no need to change the zipties. Even if you want to change collars, you will get 8 zipties in total, and you can always order extra. Thanks for your comment Huy.
Who would have thought, this is a really great way to monitor your dog. I like that you can also monitor your dog’s health. Great post, it gives a detailed description of this device. An essential monitor for new dog owners and it’s affordable too. It’s really impressive that it can be connected to your smartphones and it’s waterproof. Great stuff.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi Brenda, thank you for your comment. The FitBark is really great, and it is affordable, so that every dog owner can monitor the health of their dog. It is a great device for new dog owners, to give them a better understanding of how much exercise, and food their dog needs, but it is really a very valuable device for any dog owner that wants to keep a close eye on the health of their dog.
This is crazy, I have been looking for things that I need to get for when I buy my children a new puppy and I thought I had seen it all until I saw this Fitbit for dogs! Does it really track everything that a human Fitbit tracks? I can’t imagine having to check their stats at the end of the day, especially a puppy, I’m surprised the Fitbark doesn’t blow up the amount of movement a puppy goes through a day. I have been spending money like fun lately for a dog that we haven’t even got yet as it hasn’t had its shots yet. You say that I need zip ties to attach it to the collar but isn’t there a way where you could create a collar that would have a pocket that the fitbark would fit into? Surely that would work much better?
Hi Matthew, FitBark is a great device that will allow you to track your puppy’s activity and sleep level. There is some great data on fitbark.com showing that puppies sleep way less than human babies, and that they have the most trouble sleeping at night, and they are the most active between the ages of 3-6 months. You will really find that this device is helpful, and fun to use.
The FitBark2 does come with 8 zipties to attach it to your puppy’s collar. You will need 2 of them to attach it securely in place, and if you plan on changing collars you will need 2 each time you do so. If you don’t plan on changing collars then you will be fine. The FitBark needs to be securely in place, attached to the collar in order for it to display accurate results, so creating a collar with a pocket would decrease its accuracy.
Wowwww. Hi Jenny. I must be lucky to have come across your blog and your contents. Good to know that there is the dog version of Fitbit which is FitBark. Technology advancements are of great benefits to us and to animals too 🙂
Thanks for sharing a way with which I can easily improve my dog’s health and happiness. I love the Product
If you have the Fitbit yourself, you can easily link it to the FitBark, and track your activity levels next to that of your dog’s. I am so glad you enjoyed my article, and that you love FitBark.
Wow! Amazing article. I have always been a dog person and I love my dogs so much. I think that this is a great product and I am really wondering why I haven’t heard of it before.
I think that many people who have pets almost forget that they are pet owners. I know that I myself don’t spend enough time working with my dogs. I think that this will help me hold myself accountable and let my little guys be happy and healthy.
Thank you for this information. I look forward to giving Fitbark a try!!!
Hi Anthony, thank you for your comment. I am happy to hear that you will give FitBark a try, it is a great way for you and your dogs to get healthy together.
Wow! This would certainly be very helpful in managing your dog’s health. Does the FitBark give you reports? That would be very helpful to be able to share the report with the vet or dog trainer so they can see changes or patterns over time. It’s also a good way for your dog to communicate with you. You can see the activity and stress even if the dog can’t talk. I think it’s a great idea!
Hi Jenny, thank you for your comment. The FitBark is a great way for you to share valuable data with your vet, or dog trainer. The FitBark monitors your dog’s health index, you will be able to compare your dog’s typical activity levels and sleep levels, with your dog’s recent levels. If your dog is ill, or in pain, you will be able to notice any changes in behaviour right away, by looking at the data on the mobile app. Changes in your dog’s typical behaviour, can help you discover any medical issues and concerns, and you can share this information with your vet.
Wow, I had never heard of the FitBark Dog Activity Monitor until I read this article. I have some close friends who can definitely benefit from this as they have 3 dogs. I love that it can track your dog’s physical and rest levels at all times and even check if your dog is anxious. The FitBark 2 definitely sounds like the one to go with especially since it has a bigger battery life as well as larger memory storage for important stats. Too bad it doesn’t have GPS capabilities though if your dog should ever get loose. Do you know if they are working on a 3rd version of FitBark 2?
Hi Brian, the FitBark2 with its 6 month battery life, more memory storage, and durable design, make it the better option. The FitBark does not offer any GPS capabilities, as of yet, perhaps in the future, I am not sure. The main focus of FitBark is the health of your dog.
Many times, I had to guess if my dog was ill or not, the use of FitBark Dog Activity Monitor must be the real deal. I like the fact that you can monitor the activity, anxiety and other moods of your dog even from your work place, that is a game changer for me. One question though, does it have maximum distance it can cover for good results?
Thank you so much for a great article
Thank you for your comment. FitBark is a great device that will be able to track the early signs of your dog being ill, or having anxiety. Just by comparing a normal day of activity to that of a day that you may be away from your dog, you will be able to notice changes in behaviour, such as if your dog is anxious. You asked a great question, as long as you have your mobile phone (IOS or Android), or FitBark Wi-Fi Base Station synced with your dogs FitBark, you can track the daily activity using the mobile app.
Wow i am very impressed , i never knew that fit bark is good for my dog and is also good for my health too… some dogs are very aggressive to a point where they can even chase to bite vicious snakes, so let us say i am not seeing my dog when maybe it is in it is unable to move or any thing that might have happened to it , Is it possible to search for my dog and get it using the fit bark?
Thank you for your comment. FitBark is a great way for you and your dog to get healthy together. If you own a Fitbit, or any type of human activity monitor, all you need to do is link it to the FitBark mobile app, and you can monitor your own activity level next to your dogs. FitBark works by tracking your dogs activity levels, in the instance that you describe, you will only be able to tell that your dogs activity has gone way down by looking at the mobile app. FitBark does not have any GPS tracking ability as of yet. Maybe in the future.
FitBark sounds like a great product. I like that it fits any dog and is easy to use.The price is not too low, but it is affordable and will be a good investment for new dog “parent” who wants to know more about a dog’s health. What is most important for me is a money back guarantee, that basically gives me a 30 days trial period. Thank you for this detailed and clear review.
Hi Mary, thanks for commenting. FitBark is great for any dog parent, whether they are a first time dog owner or not, they will be able to get insights into their dogs health and behaviour. The 30-day money-back guarantee, and 1 year warranty on the FitBark is great and gives you comfort in knowing that you can test it out for 30 days. I am glad you enjoyed my review.
It’s really smart that a device like this exists. Dogs are definitely my favorite companion and I plan to get a dog sometime next year and I’m really excited for it. I’m really glad I came across this, and the price of fitbark is not over priced.
Its good to track your dogs health, its not like they can tell you whats wrong with them.
This is probably a dumb question, but could I throw this on a cat if I wanted to? I’m sure it would work the same, even though cats don’t get much exercise anyway.
Hi Ty, that’s a great question. Yes a cat can wear a FitBark, as well as other animals like a bunny, but there will not be many comparisons or baselines. When you set up your FitBark, you will want to choose an animal that is within the “not a dog” list. I hope that has helped to answer your question. FitBark also monitors sleep behaviour, so that may be more beneficial to you for your cat. Thanks for commenting.
I like that the Fitbark2 has a 6-month long lasting battery, syncs up with my smartphone for easy monitoring and that it is affordable and durable. Not really sure I trust the waterproof part. it would be a really good additional feature if they would include GPS tracking. Great idea for dogs who need to lose some weight or just to see the activity level and comparing to your own fitbit data would be fun.
Hi Alexander, thank you for commenting. The impressive battery length of 6 months, is one of the many great improvements on the FitBark2. It is waterproof, it can be submerged up to 1 meter, for up to 30 minutes. You do have to make sure that the charging pins are kept dry, when the device has become wet you should remove the cover and let the pins fully dry, before placing the cover back on. FitBark is a great device for dogs who want to lose weight, even for dogs who need to gain weight.
What next. I haven’t heard of this fitbit type monitor for dogs and I would have thought most dogs are naturally active enough not to need one of these to measure if they are getting enough exercise or not.
However it is a great idea to check on things like whether or not your dog walker is actually taking your dog for a walk, just like you suggested, or for an older dog to see if he is getting enough activity or not.
Hi Michel, there are so many gadgets for dogs on the market today, sometimes it is hard to keep up. The FitBark is a great way to see how your dogs activity level measures up to other dogs around the world, who are similar age, weight, and breed. Certain breeds require much more exercise than others, and there are so many dogs that are not meeting their recommended activity levels. An active dog is much happier and calmer than a dog that is not active enough. When a dog does not get enough exercise, that built up energy has to be let out somehow, and most of the time it results in bad behaviour such as chewing, excessive barking, or being destructive.
HiJenny and thanks for the well-written review of FitBark for dogs. I am absolutely sure that it is a must-have device for your pet’s health control. You mention at cons part of the review about lack of GPS tracker. GPS tracker for pets is another device, and it is up to every dog owner need this tracker or not.
I am so glad you enjoyed my review of FitBark. I highly recommend it for any dog parent that wants to monitor their dogs health and activity. It does not have any GPS tracking abilities, not yet, maybe in the future. FitBark prides itself on the lightweight design, and how small it is. By adding a GPS sensor, the size and weight of it would increase, making it very bulky.
Hi there!
I’m glad I found your website to read this interesting article to know more about how I can know how active is my dog, so hard to know that for sure.
My dog is not my first dog, but each dog is unique, it doesn’t matter how many dogs you have had, there’re always some questions with a dog and to know if it is doing enough exercise is something I always wonder, it looks like my dog loves to sleep all the time.
As you said on your article, by getting the FitBark dog activity monitor I would know for sure if he slept all day while I was at work or if he did some activity.
It will help me to know also how much food do I need to give him to keep him in good shape, lol.
Thanks so much for sharing a good article that will help me to know more about my best friend!
Hi Wayne, thank you for your comment. With the FitBark you would be able to tell if your dog was sleeping or moving around all day while you are at work. Every dog is different as you said, the FitBark is a great way for you to compare your dogs activity to that of other dogs around the world that are similar age, weight and breed. I am so glad to share this helpful article with you.
