Should Golden Retrievers Wear A Harness? [7 Advantages of Using a Harness]
There are many advantages of using a harness for your Golden Retriever, as compared to using a collar. Let’s look at all of the advantages below:
1. Gives You Better Control Of Your Dog
A harness is designed to wrap over your dog’s body, whether you are using a strap harness or a chest harness, you will have better control of your dog’s movements.
2. Prevents Injuries To Your Dog’s Neck
When your dog pulls while wearing a collar and leash, all that strain is put on your dog’s neck and can cause injury. A harness distributes that strain across your dog’s chest and back, and no pressure is put on your dog’s neck.
3. Prevents Choking And Gagging
Because there is no pressure put around your dog’s neck when your dog pulls there is no risk of him choking or gagging.
4. Discourages Pulling
When using a collar and leash, your dog is able to pull forward and will continue doing so because it works. With a harness, your dog’s pulling will be redirected to the side or turned around, which will cause your dog to stop pulling.
5. Can’t Escape Out Of It
Many dogs can easily wiggle their heads out of a collar, and once they learn how they will do it often. But, with a harness that is fitted properly, your dog will not be able to escape out of it because it wraps around its body.
6. No Tangling
When your dog wears a leash and collar there is a chance of either you getting tangled up or your pup getting tangled up in the leash. Especially when you have an excitable puppy or dog jumping up. With a harness, it is harder for your dog to tangle you or himself up when the leash is attached to the back.
7. Offers Support For Older Or Injured Dogs
Harnesses that have an added handle on the back allow you to aid your dog in standing up, climbing stairs, and walking. Older dogs may need extra support to help them get around, as well as injured dogs or dogs recovering from surgery who may feel unbalanced and wobbly from certain pain medications.
How To Choose The Best Harness For Your Golden Retriever
When it comes to choosing the best harness for your Golden Retriever you should take into consideration the following:
Your Golden’s Age And Temperament
Puppies and young adult Golden Retrievers are full of energy and without proper training can be a chore to walk! A no-pull harness will be your best choice.
Comfort
The best harness should be comfortable for your Golden to wear. It should not be pinching his skin in any spots or cause any skin irritation. Harnesses that have soft padding and breathable mesh will allow your dog to be comfortable during any activity.
Durability
You want the harness to be durable enough to last a long time as well as keep your pup secure. If your Golden is a strong puller, you will need a harness with thick durable reinforced straps and durable buckles to keep your dog secure.
Adjustability
A harness that is adjustable will allow you to get a snug and proper fit. You will want a harness that can be adjusted along the chest, belly, and back for a proper fit.
Ease Of Putting It On And Taking It Off
Many harnesses are either an overhead design where you pull it over your dog’s head or a step-in design that your dog has to put his front legs into. The harness you choose should be easy to put on because you don’t want to have to wrestle with your dog to try to put it on.
Reflective Strips
Many harnesses have reflective strips for added safety while walking at night. If you walk your dog during low-light conditions or near high traffic areas it is important to get a harness that has reflective material to increase your dog’s safety and visibility.
Leash Attachment Points
Many harnesses have only one leash attachment point, either on the front chest or on the back. A harness with a front clip leash attachment is best for dogs who pull as their pulling action will be redirected.
A harness with a back clip is best suited for dogs who are trained not to pull, and it is intended for leisurely walks or jogs. Some harnesses have 2 leash attachment points that allow you to use the front clip for training and the back for leisure walks.
The following short video gives you a quick overview of a front clip harness and a back clip harness:
What Size Harness Does A Golden Retriever Need?
If you are buying a harness online it is important to use the manufacturer’s sizing chart as a reference. Different harness styles will fit differently and to be sure you get the right size, you will need to measure your Golden.
Some harness sizes are based on weight so that is a good starting point. You will also need to measure your dog’s neck and chest size.
Golden Retriever puppies will usually be a size small or medium depending on their weight, and adult Goldens generally are a size large or XL.
Keep in mind that some harnesses are fully adjustable and some are not. A properly fitting harness should be snug enough to secure your dog but not tight that it will cause pinching. If the harness fits too loose there is a chance your pup could wiggle out of it.

The Best Harness For A Golden Retriever, My Top Pick
The Rabbitgoo Dog Harness is my top pick! I love this harness because it has 2 strong leash attachment points, it has a sturdy handle on the back to instantly control my dog, and it has soft padding with breathable mesh to keep my dog comfortable.
With this harness, it is easy to get a secure snug fit because it is fully adjustable with 4 points of adjustment. It goes on easily by pulling it over your dog’s head and securing the buckles. I love that it is stylish and durable, and the price point is great.
This harness has reflective strips to increase my dog’s visibility at night, but for added safety, I like to use a light-up dog collar as well while walking at night.
Final Thoughts
I hope that this article was able to answer the question of what is the best harness for a Golden Retriever? There is a multitude of harnesses out there to choose from, but I have been able to narrow the choice down for you to the best 7.
Choosing the best harness for your Golden will come down to your dog’s individual size, temperament, and what style and features you want in a harness.
Getting your dog used to wearing a harness is a little easier when they are a puppy, but any age of Golden Retriever can get accustomed to wearing a harness.
When you switch from a collar to a harness, it may take a few walks to get used to, but soon you and your Golden will notice a huge difference for the better. A harness will ensure a safer and more enjoyable walking experience for you (no more sore arms and legs), and for your dog (no more choking and gagging).

I am the proud owner of a Golden Retriever named Ellie. She keeps me busy, and when she is resting, you can find me working on my blog. She is always close by though. I live in Stirling, ON Canada with my husband, and we both enjoy the never a dull moment life with our Ellie.
A great and thorough article that you have written.
I really love dogs and cats for that sake, and
it would be really unfortunate if an animal got hurt
because the human caretaker didn’t take the right precautions.
I also found it very interesting how much of a necessity in some situations
a harness can be, with an explanation as to why.
And there were many excellent products that
you described and reviewed with expertise and guidance.
Keep up the good work!
Hi Leon,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Using a harness is a much better choice when walking your dog. It has made a huge difference in the way my Golden Retriever walks. No more pulling on her neck causing her to choke, and no more sore arms for me.
Take care,
Jenny.
Hi Jenny. Thank you for a great review. I’ve got a black Labrador and it’s not easy to hold him during the walk. I was looking for a new harness for a while but it’s not easy to choose a good one with so many options on the market. That’s why your post is so helpful, I especially like the Ruffwear one and I hope my puppy will feel comfortable in it. Looking forward to testing it in practice.
Hi Cogito,
Black Labs are an energetic breed also, I’m sure you have your hands full. A harness will make a big difference for you and your pup. I’m glad my post was helpful and I am sure you will really like the Ruffwear harness, it is a really good one.
Jenny.
Jenny,
I have to say that I enjoyed reading about Golden Retriever Harnesses and about Ellie.
My dog Chance is a Chihuahua/Whippet Mix. He’s a little more than 2 years old but will remain the size he is now. Choosing a harness for Chance is a bit of a problem because he is tiny around his midsection and has a skinny neck and small head. Most harnesses out there can not be adjusted down enough to fit him properly. X-S is too small and small is just a tad too big. Can you offer me any suggestions?
Thank you and all the best to you in the future!
Barbara
Hi Barbara,
Thank you for taking the time to read my article. I see the dilemma that you are in, and it is a tough question to answer. Chihuahua’s are a small dog, but they can pull on a leash just like any other dog. However, there is not a lot of weight behind them to require a harness with a lot of restraint. A good breathable mesh harness with secure buckles and soft comfortable padding would be a good choice. As far as sizing is concerned, I would use the manufacturers sizing chart as a guideline. You want to weigh your dog first, then measure your dog’s chest and neck, this will give you the most accurate size to go with.
The Copatchy dog harness is a nice harness because it is soft and comfortable and has breathable mesh, and it is available in smaller sizes. The Rabbitgoo dog harness is a good choice if you want something a little more sturdy, and it is available in smaller sizes too. The Rabbitgoo harness features 4 adjustment points, 2 around the neck and 2 around the chest. With 4 adjustment points, you will be able to get a perfect fit. When it comes to harnesses if your dog is in between sizes, it is always recommended to go a size up.
I hope this helps you out. Sometimes finding the best fitting harness for your dog takes a bit of trial and error. I hope you are able to find a great harness for your Chihuahua/Whippet mix.
Thank you for stopping by.
Jenny.
This article just could NOT have come at a better time. I have a very large, young, friendly Great Pyrenees/Bernese Mtn Dog/Aussie Shepherd cross. Walking this energetic, large dog on a regular collar is a nightmare and I usually twist my ankle(s) a couple of times. Someone suggested a harness but I had no idea how they worked to reduce pulling. Your article made it very clear how they help with this and I appreciate getting your favourite at the bottom. I will most certainly be getting one of these!
Hi Feochadan,
You will be so pleased with a harness for your dog. It really is a game-changer! I know exactly what you are going through with a large energetic dog, numerous times I have come home feeling exhausted with sore feet and legs! I am so glad that my article explained how a harness would stop a dog from pulling. A harness has made my walks better, I just wish I would have gotten one sooner. I know you will feel the same way.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I hope that you and your dog will enjoy walking with a harness.
Jenny.
Every dog parent has a task but when it comes to the Golden Retriever, it requires more work. Thank you so much for sharing all these with us when it comes to having the right harness to ensure we keep them in check. I actually like the list you have given as we are left with options to choose from. A very great post here and I feel that I’m drawn towards the Juxzh Truelove Soft Front Dog Harness the most.
Hi Rodarrick,
The Juxzh Truelove dog harness is a great choice. I especially like that it is soft and comfortable for dogs to wear during any activity. The colour choices are really great too, it is a very stylish harness. It would probably be my second choice.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Jenny.
Great review of some of the best harnesses. I have an American Bulldog rather than a retriever and the thing I like most about using a harness is that I could choose one made from a reflective material, which means he’s very visible at night, an important safety feature. I combine it with a head collar (a Halti) so that I have full control over him, even if he sees a squirrel). Good article, thanks for sharing.
Hi,
I am glad you enjoyed my review. Having a harness that features reflective material is a great safety feature, and I think it is very important for anyone walking at night or early morning to make sure their dog is visible. I can say that walking during the day in a busy neighbourhood can sometimes be dangerous, but at night it is even more so! Safety is a huge priority, that is why I combine my harness with an LED collar too.
Dogs and squirrels, I think all dogs love to chase them! I have never tried a Halti before on my Golden Retriever, but it sounds like it gives you great control over your dog.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience.
Jenny.
