Being a dog owner is a rewarding experience, but it also comes with many challenges and messy situations. Dogs have a tendency to always find a mud puddle to walk through, and they have no problem bringing dirt and grass into your home, it just sticks to their paws. However, the biggest challenge is all that dog hair!

If you have a dog that sheds, then you know what a struggle it is to keep your house clean. You can vacuum, and vacuum some more, but who has time for that? That’s why you need a robot vacuum, you can just sit back and let the robot do the dirty work. How do you know what the best robot vacuum for dog hair is? I did all the hard work for you, and came up with 3 of the best.

Before we get to the 3 best robot vacuums, you will want to know what to look for when choosing a robot vacuum.

What To Consider Before Buying A Robot Vacuum

With so many robot vacuums on the market today, it can be a bit overwhelming when trying to decide on which one will do the best job at cleaning up all that dog hair. You will need to consider the following:

Your Budget

How much are you wanting to spend on a robot vacuum? Prices range from $200 to as much as $1000, and the lower priced robot vacuums will not have as many of the features as the expensive ones. Features such as tractioned brush rollers and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Your Flooring

Is your flooring mostly made of hard surfaces like hardwood, laminate, and tile? Or do you have mostly carpet? Many robot vacuums are designed for hard floor surfaces and can handle low-pile carpet, or thin carpet, while other robot vacuums are able to handle medium-pile carpet.

If your house is mostly made up of carpet, and you are of course a dog owner, then you will need a robot vacuum that will be able to pick up dog hair with ease.

Battery Life and Run Time

Usually the bigger the battery, the more run time the robot vacuum will give. If your house is really big, then a bigger battery life might be important to you. You want the robot vacuum to last through an entire cleaning session, before needing a re-charge.

Robot vacuums can clean for up to 1.5 hours, on average, and some high end models can last up to 2 hours. Some robot vacuums when they are in need of re-charging will navigate back to their base station, re-charge and then finish cleaning.

How Loud Is The Vacuum?

If you plan on having the robot vacuum clean your home while you are watching TV or reading a book, then you will prefer a model that is quiet. Also, your dog may not like the sound of the vacuum, I know that my dog absolutely hates it when I bring out my vacuum cleaner.

Robot vacuums are generally quieter than standard vacuums, but some make an annoying high-pitched whistle noise, while others make a mechanical grinding noise.

Noise may be less of a concern to you if you plan on having the robot vacuum clean your home while you are out of the house.

Remote Control or Wi-Fi Connectivity?

Many of the entry-level robot vacuums will come with a remote control, which will allow you to control where the vacuum will clean. These models are simple to use, and are a great option if you are wanting to save some cash. However, having to physically control the vacuum with a remote, or by manually pushing a button, kind of defeats the purpose of having a robot do all the work for you.

If you are wanting a robot vacuum that you can schedule to clean, and is easier to control, then you will want to look for models that have a companion app. A robot vacuum that has app capabilities, means that it also offers Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, and you will be able to use voice command to run the vacuum.

Having a Wi-Fi enabled robot vacuum, will offer you more convenience. By simply installing an app on your smartphone or tablet, you can schedule, start, pause, stop, and receive notifications from your robot vacuum, all while you are away from home.

Use your smartphone or tablet as a remote control, and direct the robot vacuum to clean any room or specific spot that you want.

Some robot vacuums with app capabilities, can even map out where they have cleaned.

Slim Design

You want to look for a vacuum that has a slim design, so that it can easily maneuver underneath furniture like the couch, bed, tables and chairs.

Stair Detection and Obstacle Avoidance

This is a standard feature among almost all robot vacuums, which allows the robot to detect when it has reached a step, or ledge, so that it can back up and avoid tumbling down the stairs.

Most robot vacuums have intelligent sensors that can sense obstacles such as furniture, toys, and any other objects in their way. Sensors are located on or near the vacuum’s shock absorbing bumpers, and allow the vacuum to steer through these obstacles without slowing down.

HEPA Filter

A robot vacuum that has a HEPA filter is great for people with allergies, and people with pets. A HEPA filter will help eliminate the allergens that are produced from dog hair and any other pet dander.

Size of the Dustbin

The size of the dustbin will matter to you, especially as a dog owner. Look for dustbins that are larger than 600 milliliters, so that you don’t have to worry about emptying the bin after each cleaning, smaller dustbins will need to be emptied after each cleaning as they fill up faster.

Why You Should Get A Robot Vacuum

  • A robot vacuum will save you time.
  • You can schedule the robot vacuum to clean your home while you are at work, or any time you like.
  • Robot vacuums are small, and compact, making them easy to store.
  • They automatically adjust to different floor surfaces in your home, from tile to hardwood to carpet.
  • They are self-charging.
  • Easy to use, and require little to no effort from you.

When the battery is low, the vacuum senses this and returns to the base.

This vacuum will not damage or scratch your hardwood floors, and easily transitions from hard floors to carpets.

Cons:

Need to use Boundary Strips (included), or it will roam everywhere.

iRobot Roomba 980

When it comes to robot vacuums, one name usually comes to everyone’s mind, iRobot. iRobot was founded in 1990, and has significantly improved its robot vacuums since then.

The iRobot Roomba 980’s most impressive features are its ability to navigate an entire level of your home, keeping track of where it has cleaned, and where it has yet to clean, it cleans for a run time of 120 minutes, then goes back to its docking station to re-charge and once re charged it resumes cleaning until the job is done.

The iRobot 980 has 10X the suction power to that of the most basic Roomba, and features a Carpet Boost sensor that detects carpet or area rugs and increases suction.

A great feature of this vacuum is its dirt detect sensors that are able to detect areas that are extra dirty, such as high traffic areas, and spend more time cleaning them.

Features:

  • 120 Minutes Runtime

Pros:

This vacuum allows you to schedule routine cleaning cycles, all with your smartphone.

This vacuum handles dog hair with ease, it really does a great job on all floors, and it increases its suction power on carpets, with its Carpet Boost. The brushes do not get tangled, and in high traffic areas that are extra dirty this vacuum goes over them twice.

On hard floors and in standard cleaning mode, this robovac cleans continuously for up to 2 hours, then goes to its base to re-charge, and resumes cleaning until the job is done.

Cons:

Some users of this vacuum have mentioned that it is loud, especially when it is vacuuming carpets on Carpet Boost.

It is expensive.

Some users have mentioned that it does not clean corners and edges thoroughly, because of its round shape.

The dustbin can be hard to empty, and users have mentioned that the bin is small. Upon first use this vacuum will pick up a lot of dust, dirt and dog hair, and that is a good thing. After you let it run a few days a week, it will not be picking up as much, so the dustbin will not need emptying as much.

Samsung PowerBot R7070 Pet Robot Vacuum

The Samsung is Wi-Fi enabled, and works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can be controlled with a remote as well which is included.

This vacuum is easy to clean, the dustbin is see through and top loading, and pops out with the touch of a button. The filter is washable and reusable.

  • Wi-Fi Connected
  • Voice Control with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Bixby
  • Edge Clean
  • Self-Cleaning brush, automatically detangles & removes pet hair collected around brush
  • Large wheels, transitions with ease from hard floors to carpets
  • Schedule cleaning times
  • Washable filter
  • 9.5 pounds
  • 3.8″ thin
  • 1-Year Warranty

Pros:

Users of this vacuum love how it does a great job of sucking up dog hair, and hair does not get tangled. This vacuum does a great job of returning to its base.

This vacuum has Edge Clean technology, a rubber blade extends out of the vacuum to clean hard to reach areas like corners and edges along walls.

A remote control is included for you to operate this vacuum without Wi-Fi, if you wish.

Cons:

At a height of 3.8″ some users of this vacuum have reported that it has difficulty fitting underneath furniture, and gets stuck.

The dustbin is small.

Tough Decision But… The Winner Is

Eufy Boost IQ RoboVac 30C

I chose this vacuum as the winner because it has amazing suction power and picks up dog hair from carpets and hard floors with ease. I like that it is super quiet and super thin, just under 3 inches, it doesn’t get stuck under furniture.

It is the most affordable vacuum out of the 3 that I reviewed, and it has Wi-Fi connectivity, and includes a remote for operating without your smartphone.

For anyone wanting to get a robot vacuum, without paying an arm and a leg for it, I highly recommend the Eufy Boost IQ RoboVac 30C.

  1. Great review.  I have been saving up to buy me a robot vacuum for about two months now, because I own a mix breed dog (shepherd lab) and he sheds like mad crazy.  I was looking for a robot vacuum with WI-FI, and the Samsung looks like a really good choice for me, because it’s reasonably priced.

Thanks for helping me find a great robot vacuum.

    -Dora

    1. Hi Dora, I am so glad to help you find a great robot vacuum.  The Samsung Powerbot R7070 is an excellent choice for you, it has great suction, and does really well at cleaning corners and edges.  It is reasonably priced, and has a 1-Year warranty, you will enjoy using it.  Thanks for your comment.

  2. Hi Jenny,

Thank YOU for reviewing these. Lucky me, my 2 little dogs don’t go for mud puddles, but their dog hair and dander certainly is an issue. Not only that but, I have been thinking seriously about purchasing a robot vacuum as a solution. I had no idea they could handle carpeting too, huh!

So, because of that high pitch whistling noise it would not be wise to schedule the robot vacuum to work while trying to sleep at night then? That is disappointing, because I would have loved to set it and forget it for night time operation.

Okay, but I do not own an Alexa or a Google Assistant, so does that mean I cannot benefit with that option? However, I do have a tablet that I could use.

With these 3 great choices I will need to check to see if they are available on Amazon’s Canadian site. Your links led me to the United State’s Amazon.

Sounds like the iRobot 980 might have been the best option for my needs, but OUCH! That price tag is making it a no-go for me too. 🙁

    1. Hi Trish, thank you for your comment.  It is no problem for you if you do not own an Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, that is used if you want to use voice command. For instance, you would just say “Alexa, ask RoboVac to start cleaning”, and it would clean, it is very cool.

Your tablet can be used to operate the vacuum, you would just need to install the app.  The Euphy and the Samsung both come with a remote to operate without Wi-Fi, and the iRobot does not have a remote included to use without Wi-Fi, so you will need to push the clean button manually.

The Euphy BoostIQ RoboVac 30C, is the most quiet of the 3 vacuums, you can be in the same room with it without being bothered by noise.

All 3 robot vacuums are offered on the Canadian Amazon site, and the Euphy 30C is the most affordable option.  The iRobot is the most expensive.

I hope that I have answered your questions, and if you need more help or information I would be happy to help.

  3. Thanks for the very informative review of robot vacuums for dog hair, Jenny.  While animal hair is not such a problem for me, I have been noticing an increase in the breeding habits of dust bunnies at my house.  Anything that can handle dog hair well, will probably significantly cut down on the dust bunny population, I am thinking….

    1. Hi Netta, you are absolutely right, a robot vacuum that is powerful enough to suck up dog hair, will have no problem tackling dust and debris in your home.  Any of the 3 that I reviewed are great on hard floors, and have increased suction power on carpets, just think of how clean your home will be after you use a robot vacuum, and the time you will save.  Thanks for commenting.

  4. Wow Jenny, I really did not know that something like this exists. I have two dogs and you are right, they can make a real mess with their hair but I always clean it manually. I like to use Samsung brand so I think that it will be good to buy PowerBot R7070 Pet Robot Vacuum. My wife will be happy because of this.

    1. Hi Daniel, thank you for your comment.  With a robot vacuum you will no longer have to clean all that dog hair manually, think of the time you will save.  The Samsung PowerBot R7070 Pet Robot Vacuum is a great choice, it really does a great job cleaning edges and corners, because of the rubber blade that extends out of the vacuum, a great feature.  Samsung is great, and if you already own Samsung products you will have no issues getting it set up, and you’ll love how easy the robot vacuum is to clean, and the dustbin just pops right out.

  5. After reading your in depth review I must say I am also leaning towards the Eufy Boost IQ RoboVac 30C one because of the price, I think though the iRobot is a great brand it is becoming overpriced mainly due to the name, just my opinion. I am getting one for my studio though it is a small room I just dont always have time. With a mini dachshund and beagle mix the shedding is constant!! I like the fact you pointed out the quietness of it,she hates my big vacuum cause of the noise.

    1. Hi Cathy, price wise the Eufy is great, and offers great suction, and Wi-Fi connectivity, it has a lot of the features that a higher end robot vacuum would have, but at an affordable price.  The best thing about it is that it is super quiet!!  I know my dog hates it too when I bring out my standard vacuum, but with the Eufy robot vacuum it is not an issue.

  6. Hi Jenny

I love robo vacs but need to update mine as I have overworked it, having 3 large dogs here inside a lot.

Great products but I need to buy a better model as I bought cheap this is not a good idea as the better quality, the longer they last and thank you for this great post – i will bookmark and come back.

    1. Hi Vicki, thank you for commenting.  Robot vacuums are really great for sucking up all that dog hair, especially from 3 dogs like you have.  The Eufy RoboVac 30C is affordably priced, and is very powerful, and offers great features just like the more expensive robot vacuums.
